Beechmere Fire Update

Friday 1st November 2019

Avantage, working with Cheshire East Council and Your Housing Group, have welcomed the findings of the investigation into the fire at Beechmere, in which 130 residents lost their homes and personal belongings.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue carried out a forensic investigation of the extensively damaged complex and have found that the fire was accidental and began on a third-floor roof terrace, spreading through the building.

More than 100 elderly residents were evacuated safely, thanks to the swift actions of the fire service, staff at the complex and the quick thinking of local residents who helped with the evacuation.

Your Housing Group assisted by the council’s housing options team, is in the process of finding long-term housing for the residents who have been placed in temporary accommodation. Around two-thirds of the residents have been found alternative permanent homes to date.

The intention is to rebuild the Beechmere complex and Avantage are currently working with the council and partner organisations on progressing this.

On Thursday, the 8th of August 2019, we suffered a catastrophic fire at our Residential Retirement Village, Beechmere in Crewe. It has been a tragic situation for everyone concerned.

The response from Your Housing Group and the wider community has been overwhelming. We are working with Your Housing Group to ensure they have everything they need to support the residents and staff.

Avantage is committed to minimising the disruption which has arisen on site extending to the initial demolition and clearance works which are underway, and ultimately to rebuild Beechmere.

Detailed investigations are ongoing in order to determine the precise cause of the fire, and we are continuing to work closely with Cheshire Fire and Rescue to help facilitate their investigation.

In the meantime people have been asking us about insurance. Our advice is that in the first instance you should approach your own insurers and advise them of the incident and the damage that may have been sustained to your property.

Please keep referring to this website for updates and further guidance.  We have also set up a dedicated telephone help line for insurance queries and email address where you can direct any enquiries regarding insurance.
